Sony Blu-Ray DvD Players. BDP-Bx1 or BDP-S550?

Ok so here's the deal my girl friend got me the BDP-Bx1 for Christmas but I bought a TV that gave the BDP-S550 away for free with purchase. Lets take out the pissing the girl friend off if I take her gift back out of the picture what one would you go with? Will Blu-Ray DVD player play…?

Will it be able to play American dvd's normally in Europe? and by normally I mean being able to be seen and heard-no problems or complications?
I know they use PAL there and the one I got my boyfriend only plays dvd's for the U.S. so I was wondering if I got him an American dvd to go along with it, will that play there perfectly? or no?
