Hi all, Is a top grade 1080p upgrade DVD player ie: Denon DVD1940 as good as a Blueray Player at play back?

Nope. upconverting DVD players can only interpolate to add pixels to fit the resolution you set (720p, 1080p/i). You aren't actually adding any new information by doing this, so the picture can only be marginally better.
